When one day's notice makes sense

Giving 24 hours rather than walking out the same hour is worth doing when you can: it lets your manager reassign your immediate work and shows good faith that protects your reference. Before you commit to it, check your offer letter, contract, or handbook — a signed agreement can require a longer notice period and may tie unused-PTO payout to giving it. If a single day is truly all you can offer, that's okay; the letter just needs to be short and free of blame.

What to put in the letter

State that you're resigning and give your last working day as a specific date — tomorrow's date — so there's no ambiguity. Add one neutral line acknowledging the short notice, and offer to spend your final day documenting handoffs or being reachable for questions afterward. In the same letter, ask for written confirmation of your final pay date and any accrued PTO owed; many states set a deadline for final wages, and a dated letter starts that record.

Is 24 hours enough notice to resign?
In at-will employment there's no legal minimum — you can leave with one day, or none. One day is more courteous than an immediate exit and easier on your reference. The exception is a contract or handbook that requires a set notice period, so check yours first.

Will one day's notice hurt my reference?
It can, but far less than walking out with no notice. Offering to document your work and stay reachable for a short window afterward goes a long way. Keep the letter gracious and blame-free.
