The traps to know before you write
The notice window. Most agreements want written notice before your next billing date — commonly ten to thirty days. Miss it and you own another full month. No proration. Whole-month billing is the norm; moving out on the 3rd usually refunds nothing, so aim your move-out at the end of a paid period. Empty means empty. The unit must be cleared, swept, and — the step everyone forgets — your lock removed. A locked unit is an occupied unit. Auto-pay outlives intentions. Cancel the auto-draft only after the final legitimate charge, or a "failed payment" fee can appear on a unit you no longer use.
What your letter must pin down
- The unit, precisely: facility location, unit number, and the name on the rental agreement.
- The termination date, aligned to a paid-period boundary: "effective [date], or the earliest date permitted under the agreement's cancellation terms, whichever is later".
- Move-out logistics, confirmed in advance: the unit will be empty, swept, and your lock removed by that date.
- The closeout: request a final statement showing a zero balance and any deposit or fee reconciliation, sent to your forwarding address.
- Written confirmation that the rental terminates on the stated date with no further charges.
Deliver it so it counts
Email plus certified mail covers both speed and proof — facilities process email fast, but the mailed copy with a return receipt is the record. On move-out day, photograph the empty unit and the bare hasp where your lock was. That photo plus the letter closes every argument before it starts.

Create My Cancellation Letter — $9Common questions
Can I just stop paying once I've moved my stuff out?
No — the rental continues until you properly terminate it, and unpaid storage balances escalate fast because facilities hold powerful lien rights over anything left behind and can send balances to collections. Always end it in writing and get the zero-balance confirmation.
Will I get a refund for the unused part of the month?
Usually not. Most storage rentals bill in whole months with no proration, which is why the smart move is timing your move-out and effective date to the end of a paid period rather than mid-month.
What counts as actually 'moved out'?
Empty unit, swept, your lock removed, by the termination date. A unit with your lock still on it reads as occupied and keeps billing. Photograph the empty, broom-clean unit with the door open before you leave.
